Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 28 July 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,008) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (29,459) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,231) are currently in detention, (10,922) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to AAPP sources, prisoners, including political prisoners, from Magway Prison, Mandalay Prison, and Insein Prison, were transferred to other prisons in the third week of July. Political prisoners who are detained in these prisons have been losing their lives due to inadequate medical care. Pasam Theiya (aka Zarni Aung), a monk imprisoned in Mandalay Prison in Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay Region, was suffering from cancer. His condition worsened due to inadequate medical treatment, and he died at Mandalay General Hospital on July 25, 2025. Junta forces, arriving in large numbers, arrested him at Bagan Monastery in Mandalay City on February 21, 2022. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison under Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law on July 17, 2024.

In addition, the junta has continued its attacks, deliberately targeting civilians. On July 25, junta forces conducted an aerial bombing and fired artillery shells at Za Yat Seik Village in Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region, killing 10 civilians. On July 26, they also carried out an aerial bombing using aircraft on Pala Town in the same township, killing a monk. Similarly, on July 26, junta forces conducted an aerial bombing on a monastery in Myat Shu Village, Natogyi Township, Mandalay Region, killing six people, including children. The monastery was housing internally displaced persons.
