Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,965) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (24,371) people were arrested and among them, (19,856) are currently under detention, (7,149) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (98) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 21, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (141) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,515) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, junta forces raided and set fire to civilian areas which are non-military targets across the country, forcing locals to flee. From August 16 to 20, a military column of over 200 junta personnel raided Thar Si Village in Kale Town, Sagaing Region, and set fire to around 100 houses. An estimated 3,000 locals had to flee for safety as a result.

In addition, junta forces were attacking civilian areas without any clashes occuring, forcing locals to flee for safety. On August 19, over 80 junta personnel attacked the western part of Tabayin Township, Sagaing Region. As a result, an estimated 10,000 locals from Kya Khat, Pyan Kya, Hna Be Hla, Bagan, Lat Tee, Khun Taung, Hnaw Pin, Nyein Chan Ywar Thit, Gway Pin Kone, Min Te Kone and Ma Kyi Sauk and other nearby villages had to flee for safety.

According to data collected by AAPP, between January and August 21, 2023, (35) women and (182) men; (217) people in total were killed due to junta’s shootings across the country, with Sagaing Region consisting the highest number of fatalities, with (90) victims.
