Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,949) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (24,347) people were arrested and among them, (19,833) are currently under detention, (7,113) of whom are serving sentences.
AAPP verified that on August 1, 2023, the sentences of (19) detainees were commuted from death penalty to life imprisonment. Among the (19), (2) of them have been sentenced to death on August 16, 2023, under additional charges.
There are a total of (98) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 17, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (141) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,514) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by AAPP, between January and August 17, 2023, (172) people were killed by the junta’s artillery strikes across the country. Sagaing Region recorded the highest fatalities, with (56) victims.
On August 15, at around 2 pm, junta forces fired 60 mm artillery shells at villages in Yinmarbin Township in Sagaing Region. An artillery shell exploded in Pay Kone Village and a 10-year-old child was killed from artillery shrapnel, while 5 locals were injured.
