Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,876) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (24,154) people were arrested and among them, (19,681) are currently under detention, (6,945) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 3, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (158) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,473) people have already been released.
On the Full Moon of Second Waso, the junta announced, under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the release of (7,749) prisoners across the country.
As of 5 p.m., Yangon time, AAPP has collected and confirmed the release of approximately (210) political prisoners, although, only (82) of these have been identified. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to data collected by AAPP, from July 1 to 31 2023, (27) people were killed by junta’s artillery strikes across the country, with Sagaing Region consisting the highest number of fatalities with (12) victims. On July 29, 2 artillery shells fired by junta forces into Ma Au Village in Monywa Township, Sagaing Region exploded and killed 15-year-old Htet Ei. Moreover, 3 people, including a pregnant woman were injured.
Additionally, (45) people were killed in detainment across the country, with Sagaing Region reporting the highest fatalities with (33) victims. On July 21, at around 2 am, a military column with around 100 junta forces attacked Son Chaung Village in Yinmarbin Township, Sagaing Region. The junta forces arrested and killed 8 locals, including 4 youths under the age of 18 and 6 members of People’s Defence Force; a total of 14 people. Afterwards, their bodies were found in the village and nearby areas, with injuries indicating torture and gunshots.
