Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 8 September 2025

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,205) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (29,641) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power. (22,373)are currently in detention, (11,052) of whom are serving sentences.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

Political prisoners in prisons across the country face oppression and are deprived of their full rights. Due to prison conditions, including lack of access to healthcare, inadequate nutrition, and overcrowding, deaths are occurring. On March 16, 2021, Zaw Linn was arrested by the junta, and on March 9, 2022, Mahaaungmyay Court in Mandalay (Obo) Prison sentenced him to 38 years in prison under Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act and Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Zaw Lin, who suffered from kidney disease, liver disease, and lung disease, had been receiving medical treatment at Mandalay General Hospital since August 30, 2024. While under treatment, his condition worsened, and he died at Mandalay General Hospital on September 4, 2025.

Moreover, the junta continues targeting civilians using a variety of violent measures, resulting in an increasing number of civilian deaths. Over the past week, (16) civilians have been confirmed by name, having been killed by junta forces across the country. A separate list of (18) additional deaths still requires confirmation and verification.
