Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,229) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (21,300) people were arrested and among them (17,421) are currently under detention, (5,586) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (109) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 10, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (151) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,857) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected the last few weeks by the Research and Documentation Department of AAPP, detentions targeting school teachers have accelerated. 15 teachers including Ei Shwe Sin Myint, a leader of Federal School of Aungmyaythazan in Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay Region, were arrested. The Federal School of Aungmyaythazan is linked with the Ministry of Education of the National Unity Government and provides online education. The military junta has also used two aircraft to attack with heavy weaponry villages in Shwegu Township, Kachin State. Houses in Si Mu Lay Village, Si Mu Gyi Village and Si Thar Village were burnt down as a result.

According to information gathered today, on April 7, the Myitkyina Prison Court sentenced Reverend Dr. Hkalam Samson, a former chairman of Kachin Baptist Committee, to six years in prison. The six-year prison sentence includes two years under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act, one year under Section 505 A of the Penal Code, and three years under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Junta forces arrested him in December, 2022 at Mandalay International Airport while he was traveling to Thailand to receive medical treatment.

In addition, on April 7, the Homalin Township Court sentenced Kyaw Win Sein, a strike leader from Homalin Township, Sagaing Region, to a total of 11 years and six months in prison. His sentence includes a year and six months under Section 505 A of the Penal Code and 10 years under Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Junta forces arrested him on August 1, 2022, while he was receiving medical treatment in Mandalay City.
