Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Updated 7 April 2023
Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,225) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (21,276) people were arrested and among them (17,397) are currently under detention, (5,566) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (109) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 7, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (151) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,857) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to information gathered today, on April 5, the Monywa District Prison Court sentenced Monywa strike leader Wai Moe Naing to serve 3 years in prison under Penal Code Section 505 A, 3 years in prison under Penal Code Section 148, 20 years in prison under Penal Code Section 395, 7 years in prison under Penal Code Section 397, and 1 year in prison under Penal Code Section 323—a total of 34 years of prison time. Because the court decided to have him serve the sentences concurrently, he will serve 20 years in prison. Before receiving this 20-year concurrent sentence, Wai Moe Naing had already been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Thus, in total, he will now serve 32 years in prison. Moreover, he is still facing other charges the junta has unjustly brought against him.
In addition, on April 5, at around 4 p.m., a clash broke out between junta forces and People’s Defence Forces near Than Bo Village in Nawnghkio Township, Shan State. An artillery shell fired by junta forces exploded on a house in the village, killing 11-month-old Sai War War Tun and his 14-year-old sister Nang Ma Aye. Their parents were also seriously injured and are being treated at Pyinoolwin Hospital.
AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses.
